
Cultural Gdynia
Gdynia residents are good at enjoying themeselves - together with visitors from Poland and abroad. Concerts accompanied by fireworks and laser images againts the sky,attracting dozens of thousands to Skwer Kościuszki,shantey and maritime song festivals on board sailing ships,marine salvage and SAR demonstrations are typical attractions of the city. Gdynia is a city of festivals,among them is one of the best and the largest musical festivals in Europe - the Heineken Open'er Festival at the Kosakowo airfield.For a few years, it has regulary taken place in July and attracted more than a hundred thousand people,who come here for a couple of days to listen to international stars. Gdynia is the place Festival of Coffee in April. Gdynia is a jazz-loving city. There are many excellent jazz clubs here, some of international renown.No wonder the unique Ladies' jazz Festival has chosen gdynia as its venue. Early in July each year, yoy can hear the most outstanding female jazz players and musicians,like Eva Mendes, Yvonne Sanchez, Stacey Kent, Saskia Laroo or Patricia Barber.The Blues Festival also in July, is an open-air event held at the Promenade ( Bulwar Nadmorski), which attracts its devotees irrespective of the weather.The international festival of Sacred Music in September has for years been attended by great artists from all over Europe - symphony orchestras,choirs and soloists.Gdynia also hosts Globaltica - the summer World Music Festival, with such stars as Cesaria Evora,Burning Spear,Goran Bregovic or Sinead O'Connor. However,the oldest and best known festival held in Gdynia is the Polish Film Festival,considered to be the most important event in Polish cinematography. The Baltic Festival of Science and Research is meant for a different public. Part of the event is the Gdynia Science and Reserch Picnic popularising the achievement of researchers exploring seas and oceans as well as from other disciplines. A new development is the Centrum Nauki Experyment. It is a hands-on-facility where you are not only allowed but actually supposed to empirically learn the laws of physics. Gdynia also invites you to the Danuta Baduszkowa Musical Theatre - one of the best musical scenes in Poland as well as to the Witold Gombrowicz City Theatre, with its unique summer stage at the beach under the cliff in the littoral district of Orlowo. Gdynia also invites you to the Gdynia City Museum, The Gdynia Aquarium, The Navy Museum, Ship-Museum ORP "Błyskawica", Museum-Sailing Frigate "Dar Pomorza', Museum of Amber Inclusion, gdynia Museum of Motorization and Sea Fishery Heratige Park.
